What is your favourite part about being an entrepreneur?

The schedule flexibility and spending my time doing things that I’m truly passionate about.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had worked in several healthcare settings as a dietitian, helping patients improve their overall health through nutrition. A common theme I noticed was that many of my patients wanted to make healthier food choices, but they told me they didn’t know how to cook, or how to use certain ingredients, or they didn’t have the time to make meals from scratch. So much of my job had been to sit in an office and educate people about nutrition, but I was suddenly inspired to make the education hands-on. In turn, this led me to combine nutrition education and cooking, and I now offer cooking classes & nutrition coaching to show people how to make quick, easy and nutritious meals to improve their health.

What services or products do you offer?

  • nutrition coaching
  • cooking & baking workshops
  • private in-home cooking classes
  • group in-home cooking classes

What is your favourite ingredient to cook with?

Flour – the things you can make with flour are endless!

What is the best meal you’ve ever had and where was it?

In 2018 I went on a hiking trip in Alberta. I stayed at a very remote lodge in Banff National Park, and had the most incredible meal. It was stuffed eggplant, which I typically don’t love, but this was amazing! It could have been that I was starving after hiking all day, or the beauty of the mountains, or the fact there were a bunch of us eating by candlelight at a harvest table – who knows the reason, but that was the most delicious meal I’ve ever had.

What are 3 things (nutrition wise) you live by and educate your clients on?

  1. All foods fit
  2. Eat more veggies
  3. Learn to cook (even just a couple very simple recipes)

Any advice for someone looking to start a business? Start now. You won’t feel ready, and it won’t be perfect, but honestly, you’ll never truly feel ready to start. If you start today, a year from now you’ll be so happy you did.

Why South Georgian Bay? What do you love about living and running a business here?

I spent my weekends skiing here as a kid and moved here permanently the first chance I got. Before I became a business owner, it was the endless number of things to do in the area, and the beauty, that reeled me in. Now that I’m a business owner, it’s the people in the community that I love the most. There are so many other small businesses in the area, and I find everyone to be so supportive, helpful, and encouraging.

Who do you look up to for ideas and inspiration?

I look to other women business owners for inspiration. Being a business owner can feel lonely and isolating, and imposter syndrome and comparing yourself to others can be paralyzing. But when I see and hear about other women in business achieving big things, and meeting their goals, it inspires me to keep doing what I’m doing, and push past the feelings of self doubt.

What are your favourite local spots to visit on a day off?

I love a good summer day off! Some of my local favourites are: Good Grief for a vanilla chai soy latte (hot or iced, they’re both delicious), Pom Pom for ice cream after a bike ride, reading in Bayview park, the Collingwood Farmers market on a Saturday morning, Still Field’s Brewery on a hot summer evening, and Bello or Low Down for a bite to eat! In sum, there is no shortage of amazing spots to visit in the area.

What’s your favourite service that you offer?

Private cooking classes. I love working one-on-one with clients because it means I can curate the recipes to their preferences, and I can provide individualized education and resources.

What is your favorite weekend trip?

I love a summer cottage weekend. It doesn’t matter who’s cottage or where, but preferably it’s on a lake with a dock and includes a weekend full of good food featuring the best things: summer flavours, lots of laughs, early mornings to enjoy the sun rise, moments of quiet to snuggle with a good book, drinks by the water, nostalgic music, and creating memories.

What was one new experience you tried that was completely unknown or uncomfortable to you at the time you tried it?

I signed up for a 6-week pottery class a little while ago. I thought it would be a great way to learn a new skill, challenge myself and meet some new people. Nothing could prepare me for how hard it was going to be, and it was uncomfortable not being good at something. I was humbled. Once I got over that, it was a lot of fun.
