Starter Company Plus Spotlight: Bruce Zigman

The South Georgian Bay Small Business Enterprise Centre is pleased to welcome a new cohort of 2021 Starter Company Plus participants including Bruce Zigman who owns the new coffee bike shop Downtown Collingwood, Summit Social House. This is the first bike + coffee shop combo to come to Collingwood and the locals are loving it. A spot to grab a tune-up and a delicious latte all in one.

Located on the corner of Hurontario and 4th street, this spot offers a little taste for coffee lovers and the adventurous at heart. Aside from coffee and bikes, the café carries a variety of locally made treats, snacks and beverages for you to enjoy. What a hub!

About Summit Social House:

Get your daily dose of coffee. Have it taste great. Have it be consistent. Summit Social House is a place where you can explore what coffee has to offer beyond its caffeine — the flavours and stories of what’s in your cup and being able to enjoy it in some of the same ways that wine has been enjoyed for centuries.

We are a full service bike-friendly café. Whether you need a flat tire changed,  seasonal tune-up, custom parts ordered and installed, shocks rebuilt or a full winter maintenance overhaul, we have the tools, experience and staff to get the job done professionally and in a timely manner.

Hang out with friends, grab a beer and watch the Grand Tours and other seasonal sporting events at Summit Social House.

Read on for a Q+A about Bruce and his business.

What is your favourite part about being an entrepreneur?

The multifaceted roles you must undertake to reach your goals. Teaching and motivating others who are working with you.

What inspired you to start your business?

Doing something that I love and bringing joy to others, on a daily basis.

What takeaways are you looking to get out of the Starter Company Plus program?

Learn from local and successful entrepreneurs. Make sure I’m well equipped with knowledge for this venture.

What services or products do you offer?

Specialty coffee. Snacks and light meals. Beer. Full service bike shop. A super cool place to hang out with like-minded people.

What is unique about your business?

We are the first, and only bike café in Collingwood. Bringing together two sectors that blend well, we decided to take a “high end customer service” approach to both of them, creating a welcoming coffee bar and a one-of-a-kind bike repair shop.

Approximately how many hours a week do you work?

I work 45-50 hours a week, some at the café and some behind the scenes making sure it’s running smooth. A balanced life is essential and finding time for hobbies and family is important to me.

A bicycle mechanic is working on a bicycle wheel.

What is one important skill every person should have?

Being understanding/open-minded of others.

What are you favourite local spots to visit on a day off?

Some quiet, less known mountain areas on snow covered days. It’s totally quiet, gives you time to relax and reflect while enjoying the outdoors.

What is your favorite weekend trip?

Backcountry camping, away from civilization and cell phone reception.

What is your favorite job you’ve ever had and why?

My current one, at Summit Social House. All my previous work and business experience has led me here, and prepared me for this project.
