His business is built on convenience, offering in-home service calls and personalized lessons to help clients feel confident, connected, and in control of their tech.

To learn more about Owen and his new business, read the q+a below.

Tell us about your journey as an entrepreneur. What sparked the idea to start your business?

I’ve always been interested in technology, so two years ago I started working at my local computer repair shop. The shop closed in December and a little while after, my mother told me about the Summer Company program. That’s when the idea sparked. The rest is history.

What products or services do you offer, and how do they solve a problem or meet a need?

My services help save people time, stress, and money. I do this by offering a wide variety of device repairs and services, being available for house calls, and giving guidance to my clients on how to use their devices.

Who or what do you turn to for creative ideas and business inspiration?

For creative ideas, I often ask friends what they would do. It always helps to get a few new opinions on something. For business inspiration and ideas, I’m always turning to my mom. She has helped me every step of the way with my business, and I couldn’t have done it without her.

What sets your business apart? What do you want people to remember about you?

A Bit of Bytes is all about convenience of the client when it comes to technology. It takes one call and I’ll come to their home, diagnose their issue, and help them fix it. I want the process to be as simple as possible and for clients getting their device fixed to know it doesn’t have to be a hassle. I’m just one call away.

Why did you apply for the Starter Company Plus program, and what are you hoping to gain from it?

I wanted to try and turn my hobby and skills into a business. I have a passion for technology and I loved the idea of having my business centered around that passion.

What mindset shift helped you grow your business the most?

Breaking down big goals into smaller, more manageable goals has really helped me grow. However, it was very intimidating when I first started out. There was so much I needed to do. Writing down small goals on a list and going through them one by one was the most effective way to get things done. Every time I checked one off, I felt accomplished, and it made me want to keep going. It made the whole thing feel way less scary and way more doable.

What do you love most about serving your community?

I love meeting all sorts of people and making connections in my community. It helps my business grow and reminds me how good it feels to help people out. Serving my community is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

What’s your favourite product or service that you offer?

I enjoy doing hardware replacements the most. It’s simple to change out parts and feels satisfying to see the device back to working standards.

What are your favourite local spots to visit on a day off?

Wasaga Beach is where I call home and I’m a 10 minute walk from the water. I spent a lot of free time there. In addition, there is also a boba tea shop near Walmart called Gong Cha. Both places are excellent.

If you had an extra hour in the day, how would you spend it?

I’ve always wanted to learn how to cook better, so I would spend the extra hour in the kitchen.

What quote or mantra keeps you inspired?

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” – Jimmy Dean
