Can you tell me about your journey as an entrepreneur? What motivated you to start your business?

My journey as an entrepreneur started when I graduated from nutrition school. I wanted flexibility and freedom so I chose to start my own business. It has been a slow process as I honed in on where I wanted to specialize. Being an entrepreneur can be lonely and overwhelming especially when you don’t have business experience. The support that I have received through SBEC and the Starter Company Plus program has been a lifesaver!

What services or products do you offer?

I am a Holistic Nutritionist specializing in the menopause transition. I offer 1:1 counseling, short group programs and public speaking engagements.

Who do you look up to for ideas and inspiration?

I am inspired by specialists in the field of health, nutrition and business. Marie Claire Haver, Mindy Pelz, Peter Attia, Shannon Gale, Erin Grace (friend and marketing mentor), Brett Hawes (teacher at my nutrition school, business coach and Freedom in Health Care advocate).

What is unique about your business? What is something you want potential clients to know?

My business is unique in that I tailor it to hormonal health and each individual client gets a program that is unique to their specific needs. We incorporate foods that support hormones in addition to using timed eating and lifestyle practices to achieve goals. I want my clients to know that I also coach in behavior change and work with my clients’ individual capabilities. They will have access to me through direct messaging (with a 24-72 hour response time), weekly accountability calls, and a welcome package when they register. Finally, I am also trained in hormone testing and interpretation and enjoy helping women get to the root cause.

Why did you apply for the Starter Company Plus program? What are you hoping to get out of the program?

I applied to the SC+ program to make connections, learn and seek mentorship and guidance.  By the completion of the program, I hope to have my business fully established so that I can grow and expand my reach to help women all over Canada.

Why South Georgian Bay? What made you start a business in this region?

I live in Blue Mountain so that is why I chose South Georgian Bay. I moved here from Toronto so I also have a presence there. I also love the support that is in this region. I think it is easier to start a business in a small town. We have a very supportive community and there are a lot of active people that live here. Fitness is a huge part of the menopause journey so it’s great that the area is conducive to building those habits.

If a celebrity was to purchase from you, who would it be (and why)?

If a celebrity was to purchase from me it would be Sangita Patel. She is a staple in Canada’s entertainment sector – she’s an on-air host with Entertainment Tonight Canada, the current host of HGTV’s Home to Win, and Canada’s Covergirl ambassador. Sangita wears many hats. She was an engineer and now has a career in television, is a wife, a mother and fitness enthusiast, so her reach is broad, and she could spread my message widely and publicly.

Can you describe a significant challenge or change that you faced while building your business and how you overcame it?

My most significant challenge with starting my own business has been imposter syndrome.  I was a stay-at-home Mom for 15 years. It has been a challenge for me to shift my belief in myself that I can actually do this. I overcame it by joining entrepreneurial groups where I found others that were in a similar position to mine. I also joined coaching groups so that I could have cheerleaders and mentors to support me and provide me with the tools to run a successful business. As my knowledge base and community built, I gained confidence.

What’s been the most rewarding aspect of building your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of building my own business is the learning process. I love gaining new knowledge and sharing it with my community. It has renewed my sense of purpose and worth.

What would be your business theme song?

Roar by Katy Perry would be my theme song. It embodies female empowerment and not letting anything push you down. My hope is that women feel empowered to tackle menopause straight on and not let it stifle their vibrancy.

How do you de-stress after a long day?

My favourite way to de-stress after a long day of running my business is to walk or practice yoga with someone I love.

What’s the strangest thing that has happened to you as an entrepreneur?

The funniest that has happened to me while running my business was my husband networking for me on an airplane. This led to a speaking opportunity and because of that connection. One day I got a random message on Linkedin from a man that met the same woman on an airplane and she recommended me. Who knew that air travel was such a great networking opportunity?

What is the most random or unexpected item on your desk?

The most random or unexpected item on my desk right now is nail polish. It’s the only time that I can let my nails dry without ruining them.

What is the best or most memorable feedback you’ve received from a client?

The most memorable feedback or review that I have received from a client was what a positive impact I have had on her life, not only nutrition but life. That is my end goal. As they say, “You are what you eat”.  Food matters that is why my tagline is FuelWellFeelWell.
