Summer Company Spotlight – Tate Skinner of Freshwater Detailing

Freshwater Detailing is hitting the streets of South Georgian Bay. Owner and Summer Company program participant, Tate Skinner, has launched his mobile car detailing business and is taking clients from Meaford through to Collingwood. The best part? He comes to you.

If you’re looking for an interior or exterior glow up, Tate is your guy. Schedule your appointment around a busy time in your schedule and return to fresh carpets, cleaned seats and a car you’ll want to re-introduce to your pals.

Learn more about Tate through our latest Q+A below. He’ll be working into the fall season even after the Summer Company program wraps up.

What is your favourite part about being an entrepreneur?

I love the various forms of freedom it gives you. Whether it’s crafting my own schedule, deciding how many jobs I want to take on, and being in control of the scalability pace.

What inspired you to start your business?

Both my parents have been entrepreneurs and I’ve witnessed them do the work. I was looking into summer work and noticed there was a lack of mobile detailers in the area. Summer Company came at a fitting time and helped me purchase start-up gear to give this business a solid start.

What services or products do you offer?

Clients can select from 3 different packages: interior, exterior or both.

What region do you service?

I’ll detail anywhere from Meaford to Collingwood. If a client is outside of that region, I’m open to accommodating.

Who is your biggest cheerleader?

My mother, hands down! She’s helped bring this business to life. Owning her own business has allowed her to create long lasting client relationships. Some of my first detailing clients came from her connections so I’m pretty grateful.

Why South Georgian Bay? What do you love about living and running a business here?

It is an amazing clientele for what I do. There is always a big variety of people with different lifestyles. Knock on wood but I’ve had some easy going, kind, and appreciative clients.

What are you favourite local spots to visit on a day off?

I love hitting up the Collingwood pier and riding my bike at 3 Stage. When I’m not being adventurous, you can find me experimenting in the kitchen and making homemade meals. Ravenna Country Market is also a must-visit. Their Montreal smoked meat sandwich on multigrain is on repeat.

Is there a type of music genre you listen to when working/creating? Does it evoke emotion?

This has been the summer of Morgan Wallen. His music is chill, diverse and it makes me feel zen when I’m detailing a car.

What crazy activities do you dream of trying someday?

I’d love to go powder skiing in BC. I’ve been skiing since I could walk and I have spent many winters on the hill. The thrill is irreplaceable.

Any advice for a student looking to start a business?

I truly underestimated the amount of work it takes to run a business. Think about something you love and find a business idea that could work in our area. Market, market, market! Finding that momentum and getting clients on a consistent basis (especially when you’re starting out) takes work. I’m excited to see where this business goes in the fall.
