Introducing Daniel Shaw of Shaw’s Creative, a local business specializing in visual storytelling and design. Their bread and butter involves transforming brand narratives into captivating visuals, from vibrant explainer videos and polished motion graphics to custom graphic designs. With a blend of artistic flair and technical skill, Shaw’s Creative makes complex ideas engaging and easy to understand. Whether you’re launching a new product, simplifying a concept, or enhancing brand identity, Shaw’s Creative should be on speed dial.

Daniel wears many hats in addition to entrepreneur. Father, comedian, and artist just to name a few. Read on to learn more about Daniel and what he loves most about his job.

Can you tell me about your journey as an entrepreneur? What motivated you to start your business?

When the company I worked for closed early 2024 I wanted to continue doing the work that I loved. Having become a new dad and wanting to see my son grow up in this beautiful community, I decided that I would start Shaw’s Creative to allow myself the freedom to stay in the area and continue my work and passion of design and animation.

What role do mentorship and continuous learning play in your entrepreneurial journey?

Mentorship is HUGE for me. Jumping into starting a business is daunting and can seem like there is no clear path. Mentorship has helped me find direction, so I can focus all my energy on building a successful business.

What services or products does Shaw’s Creative offer?

We specialize in crafting compelling explainer videos, motion graphics, graphic design, and custom illustrations. Anything that helps your business grow with creativity.

Who do you look up to for ideas and inspiration?

In design, there’s an unlimited world of inspiration. Often, I’ll look back on work by Massimo Vignelli, who would simplify complex ideas with stunning results. Or Saul Bass, who created some of the first animated movie introductions.

What is unique about your business? What is something you want potential clients to know?

With over 15 years of industry experience and a solid grasp of branding and marketing know-how, Shaw’s creates more than just eye-catching visuals—we craft solutions that engage your audience, boost conversions, and build strong brand loyalty.

Why did you apply for the Starter Company Plus program?

I was looking for advice on running the business side of things. It’s easy to think you can run a business just because you’re good at what you do, but the reality is, you don’t just get to stick to your strengths. You also must tackle stuff you never even thought about. There are so many moving parts, it’s tough to know what needs your attention first.

Why South Georgian Bay? What made you start a business in this region?
I grew up in Wasaga Beach and because of that I always have loved the area. Having worked in the city for a portion of my life, I found myself longing to be back near the water. We also have a great thriving community with many interesting businesses and people.

What’s been the most rewarding aspect of building your own business?

Seeing it evolve. What started with an idea has started to transform into something real.

What are your favourite local spots to visit on a day off?

With a toddler my “spots” can be limited. These days you’ll find me swinging at sunset point park, or the Collingwood library catching up on the latest adventure of the pout pout fish.

How do you prioritize work-life balance?

Work-life balance is so important. If you’re not balancing both worlds, it can go downhill fast. For me, drawing clear boundaries is key. I make sure to set specific times for work and dedicated times for family. This helps me stay focused and productive during work hours but also allows me to be fully present and engaged when I’m playing with my son. It’s all about being intentional with your time. Nothing slows down productivity more than hitting a wall of burnout.

What is the most random or unexpected item on your desk right now and is there a story behind it?

Right now, there’s a toy triceratops on my desk. Every day, my son asks me to bring a toy to work so it doesn’t get lonely. It always makes me smile when I see the toy he picked for the day. No matter how stressful my day is or how much I worry, seeing that triceratops reminds me that, in his eyes, I did a great job just by keeping it safe.

What is the most memorable feedback or review that you’ve received from a client?

I’ve had the chance to work with Scott Thompson from Kids in the Hall on several projects now. As a huge fan of the show growing up, it’s been an incredible experience. I won’t go into too much detail, but I added a subtle visual gag to a scene, and when I pointed it out to Scott, he laughed really hard for a few minutes and loved it. It’s not often you get to sneak jokes into projects, and it’s even rarer to do it for a comedy legend.
